In 2011, I made this homemade deodorant recipe and still use it daily. I love it… along with thousands of readers who swear by it, too. Natural deodorants may use ingredients like baking soda, coconut oil, arrowroot, sunflower seed oil, cornstarch and essentials oils, depending on the product. Gel deodorants may include more water, moisturizers, thickeners and fragrances than traditional products, as well as some of the same active ingredients. I use a variety of skin friendly oils and butters in this deodorant recipe.
Pour the mixture into recyclable deodorant containers and place them in the refrigerator to cool. Add in the essential oils and then combine all of the ingredients. This DIY deodorant uses a variety of natural ingredients that are moisturizing for the skin and have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some ingredients in conventional, store-bought deodorants can negatively impact hormone levels. Parabens are used as preservatives in deodorant products, but they have been shown to interfere with estrogen production. And phthalates have shown to disrupt testosterone production.

When using essential oils in deodorant, it’s important to mix them with a carrier oil or alcohol to ensure they are dispersed evenly and won’t stain clothing. Additionally, when working with essential oils, always use caution and read instructions carefully. This is optional, but I use this blend of essential oils to add a subtle fresh aroma to this DIY deodorant.
It has a very smooth and shiny consistency and works very well in this homemade deodorant stick. In some cases, the suction cup isn’t to blame for the struggles you’re facing. In fact, it could be the surface itself that’s causing the trouble. Make sure the area is clean, dry, smooth and flat.

However, the only way to keep vinegar (which is water-based) and oil mixed together are to add an emulsifier. The recipe I used had only coconut oil as the base. Which melts when it gets the slightest bit warm. In my lotion making adventures, I discovered that Shea butter is pretty solid and with a little beeswax, it would be nice and firm, even in the summer. Making your own deodorant is generally considered safe; however, it should be used with caution.

I was very hesitant to use baking soda because it can be irritating to the skin in large amounts. I decided to use a higher percentage of arrowroot powder in my homemade deodorant stick for this reason. Baking soda is still included in this recipe because it is a great deodorizer and I really don’t want to smell! It has not been irritating to anyone in my family so far. Using natural deodorant can seem a little intimidating at first. Since it’s stored in a jar, you have to scoop it out with your finger, a popsicle stick or a tongue depressor.

That way I have enough to last several months. I store these in a glass (because I’m really starting to hate plastic) container on my dresser, with a lid over it to prevent dust and whatnot getting on my bars. I’ve been using them about three weeks so far and still have 2 and a half bars left.
